Richard Anderson and Mathew Day, and Makaia Campbell and Wendy Mitchell are the Wairarapa open pairs champions after two days of intense competition at the Masterton Bowling Club over the weekend.
The Masterton combination of Anderson [skip] and Day was one of six pairs to qualify for post-section play on Sunday.
In the first knockout round, they beat Featherston’s Jeff Laird and Matthew Campbell 18-15, then Robbie and Doug Bennett 14-6 in the quarterfinals.
They beat father and son combo Gary and Carwyn Caffell 18-13 in the semifinals.
Anderson and Day’s final opponents were the Masterton’s John Claydon and Dave Hourigan, who beat Mark Wilkinson and Warren Linney [22-5] in the quarterfinals and Martinborough stalwarts Pedro McGillicuddy and Neville Smith [13-12] in the semifinals.
Anderson and Day prevailed 16-10 the final.
Makaia Campbell [Martinborough] and Mitchell [Masterton] defeated Lansdowne’s Diane Haswell and Martinborough’s Helen Baker 18-8 in the semifinals to set up the final against Lorraine Liggins [Park] and Teresa Hogg [Masterton], who had beaten Carrington’s Carol Voller and Tracey Jacobson 23-14.
The experienced pair were untroubled in the decider, cruising to a 17-6 victory.
The next events on the Bowls Wairarapa calendar are the Champion of Champions singles and pairs to be played at Greytown this weekend.
