Muriwai goes back to back in winning singles crown

Martinborough’s Rozanna Muriwai made it two in a row, successfully defending her Wairarapa Mitsubishi womens open singles title in a tight, tense final with Stacey Smyth on Sunday at the Masterton Bowling Club.

Nothing separated the pair going into the last end, with Muriwai gaining the early advantage of one shot.

Smyth from Carrington, who was seeking her first open title, had her chances to win
the game, but in the end, Muriwai held on to claim a 21-20 victory in a quality game of bowls.

Muriwai had qualified for the finals with a 21-18 defeat of Masterton’s Jacqui Oakley, while Smyth progressed to the decider with a
21-14 defeat of Janalle Frew from Martinborough.

Featherston’s Dale Rowe won the ‘Rampant Lion’ for non-qualifiers, beating Elva Simonsen from Lansdowne 21-18 in the final.

The last Open championship of the season will be the men’s and women’s pairs, to be played on March 4-5.
