Giants Blue got their Hutt Valley championship off to the perfect start with a 4–1 win over Cardinals at South Park on Saturday. In a tight, closely-fought game, pitching proved to be the decisive factor, with the Blues’ player-coach Justin ‘Chunky’ Karaitiana dominating on the mound and restricting the opportunities for Cardinals batters. He was backed up with some excellent ground fielding, while the Blues batters made the most of their chances to secure two valuable points in the combined premier reserve-premier three championship.

Steady rain in Whanganui resulted in the abandonment of Burger King Red Star’s Coastal Challenge match with Whanganui United without a ball being bowled. Red Star share the lead on seven points with Levin Old Boys, but have a game in hand.
