Blowout scores in Division One

HOCKEY

High scores dominated local first division matches on Saturday.

Defending champions Kia Kaha were in unstoppable form, putting 16 unanswered goals past Featherston. Gladstone Bulls also had a double-figure victory, beating JNL 10-0 and Red Star thumped Dalefield Dodgers 11-2. In the closest game, Old Boys beat Carterton Vets 3-1.

The feature game of this weekend should be the clash between the unbeaten Old Boys and the new team Gladstone Bulls, who have shown glimpses of developing into a competitive team in their first two outings.

Defending champions Dalefield NZ Racing made a winning start to the women’s division one championship, with a 3-1 defeat of Kia Kaha.

Gladstone Gold are unbeaten after two rounds, with their 4-2 win over Red Star.

In the women’s division two, Coasties Masters beat Gladstone Black 5-1. Tumu edged Featherston Force 1-0, Eketahuna Tuis had a 7-0 win over Martinborough, and Featherston Foxies put away Wairarapa Mitsubishi 5-2.

Big wins for Greytown, Athletic

FOOTBALL

Greytown Fresh Choice signalled that they’re the team to beat in the top division of the Wairarapa league with their second big win last Saturday.

Coached by former Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley, Greytown were too sharp for Carterton Redbacks, scoring nine unanswered goals. That takes their goal tally to 17 in just two rounds, with only goal one conceded.

JT Plastering Masterton Athletic maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 5-1 win over fierce rivals Douglas Villa Fall Protect.

Wairarapa United Social got their first win of the season, beating Ziggy’s Glass Masterton Presidents 5-2.

The unbeaten teams Athletic and Greytown will meet in the feature game of the third round at Hullena Park on Saturday.

Douglas Villa Skulls are the only unbeaten team after two rounds in Division Two, after their 4-2 win over Greytown.

Featherston were too good for Martinborough winning 5-2, and Greytown Property Brokers scored the only goal of their game with Masterton McAuley’s.

Greytown Spartans and Masterton Lions lead the way in Division Three, both scoring bid wins.

Spartans demolished Wairarapa Evergreens 7-1, and the Lions dominated Featherston United 5-1.

Douglas Villa Mitre 10 Megabeens and Carterton Reapers drew 1-1.
