HOCKEY
Michael Caldwell scored an incredible seven goals in Rathkeale’s 14-0 demolition of Waiopehu College last Wednesday in the intercity boys championship. They backed that up on Tuesday night with a 5-4 defeat of Whanganui High School.
Waicol lost 4-5 to Whanganui Collegiate.
St Matthew’s maintained their perfect start to the intercity girls championship, with an 8-0 thumping of Whanganui High School. The win put St Matt’s clear at the top of the table, ahead of Palmerston North Girls High School.
Waicol moved into a share of third place with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Feilding High School.
FOOTBALL
Rathkeale bounced back from a disappointing 2-5 loss to St Patrick’s Silverstream in the first round to beat Rongotai College 5-0 at Rathkeale on Saturday in the Wellington premier championship.
Jonty Roubos opened the scoring late in the first half. Oskar James [2], Noah Boyce, and Isaac Noble added goals in the second half in the convincing win that keeps Rathkeale on track for a top-four finish.
Conceding three goals late in the first half proved costly for Wairarapa College in their 4-1 loss away to Scots College.
Waicol had the better of the second 45 minutes, and Jarden Parata-French scored his first goal for the team.
They were unlucky not to finish closer with several missed chances, including two shots that hit the crossbar.
Rathkeale are at home to Wellington College and Waicol travel to St Patrick’s Town for the third round on Saturday.
NETBALL
Wairarapa College have started the Wellington regional super league division three with a win and a loss.
They kicked off their campaign last week with a 28-38 loss to Wellington Girls’ College and bounced back to beat Tawa College 40-25 on Monday.
Waicol play Heretaunga College, who have had a draw and a loss, in the next round on Monday night.
St Matthew’s are unbeaten after two rounds. In the first round, St Matt’s beat Chilton St James 21-15 and followed that up with a 35-28 win over Taita College.
On Monday night, St Matt’s take on Wellington High School, who have had a win and a loss.
RUGBY
Wairarapa College fell to their second consecutive loss in the Wellington First XV premier championship with their 12-26 loss to Rongotai College at home last Saturday.
Rongotai took a 12-0 lead at halftime only for Waicol to fight back and even the scores halfway through the second half.
Waicol coach Jonathan Tanner said they had chances to take the lead with a Rongotai player in the sin-bin but gave away too many penalties.
“Rongotai basically ground away for the last 15 minutes, and they had a six-foot four-inch centre who scored most of their tries, but we gave them a fright.”
Tanner said the Rongotai team were very big and expected to face another big team when they host Aotea College on Saturday.
Waicol and Aotea have similar records, both having lost to Scots and Rongotai.
