A record number of teams will take to sports venues for the annual Wairarapa College Sports Foundation pre-season tournaments.

Tournament director Chrissina Donald said more than 30 teams from Wellington, Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay, and Wairarapa will take part in football, hockey, and netball during the two weeks
of the school holidays.

“This is a big event on the sporting calendar and a number of teams have been attending each year from the beginning more than seven years ago,” said Donald.

“I’ve been tournament director for the last three years and am thrilled with its growth, particularly after its cancellation last year as we entered lockdown.”

The focus this week is on the boys with football at Waicol, and hockey at Clareville.

Three teams – Waicol, Hutt International Boys [HIBS], and Onslow College will compete in the football.

Each game comprised two 30-minute halves, with a 10-minute halftime break. Waicol and HIBS kicked off the action on Monday morning, with yesterday’s final game between Waicol and Onslow.

Ten teams, split into two pools of five, will contest the boys’ hockey.

The Waicol 1st XI will be joined by Lindisfarne Colts, Rongotai College, Taradale High School, and HIBS in Pool A. Rathkeale, Lindisfarne, Feilding High School, Onslow, and the Waicol 2nd XI make up the second pool.

Games will be played over four 12½ minute quarters, with the first games starting at 8.30am.

The final between the winners of both pools will be played at 6.30pm today.

Next week, the focus will turn to the girls, with hockey to be played Tuesday and Wednesday, and netball and football on Thursday and Friday.

Two groups of five will play in the hockey, with the Waicol 2nd XI, St Matthew’s 1st XI, Napier Girls High School, Taradale High School, and Queen Margaret College in Pool A, and the Waicol 1st XI, St Matt’s 2nd XI, Feilding High School, Iona, and Wellington East Girls College in Pool B.

Two Waicol teams, Taradale, Onslow, Iona, St Matt’s, and Makoura College will contest the netball, and Waicol, Queen Margaret, and Iona will play in the football.
