The Martinborough pair of Helen Baker and Bill Brunenberg came out on top in a rain-affected Wairarapa Open 2-4-2 Championship played over the weekend.
After rain severely reduced play on Saturday, Sunday’s post-section play was moved to The Masterton Bowling Club’s artificial greens, and the qualifying was extended to include 14 teams.
Baker and Brunenberg defeated Stacey Smyth and Darren Meyrick in the first round of post-section. They were too good for Jacqui Oakly and Maurice Pickard 22-9 in the quarterfinals and then defeated the experienced duo of Robyn Schischka and John Claydon 15-11 in the semifinals.
In the final, they came up against Martinborough clubmates Makaia Campbell and Clint Carroll, who had wins over Fiona Alexander and Nairn McGibbon, and Dale Lloyd Stanton and Matthew Day 18-12 in the quarterfinals, and Sharon Syms and Gavin Hamlyn 15-10 in the semifinals.
Baker and Brunenberg took an early lead in the final and controlled the game to wrap up the title with an 11-8 victory.
