As the sun goes down on 2022, Masterton District Council [MDC] will have alcohol bans in place for its coastal towns.
From tomorrow, alcohol bans and traffic restrictions will be in place for both towns, MDC Environmental Services Manager Terri Mulligan said.
She said the restrictions were normal practice for the New Year period.
“This is about keeping everybody safe on what is always a big celebration in our coastal communities.
“The beach is a great place to see in the New Year, but we want a family-friendly environment that everyone can enjoy.”
Police Sergeant Gill Flower from the Wairarapa family safety team said roadblocks would be in place.
She said alcohol would be prohibited in the public space around the beach and town, and the area would be monitored by police.
“People need to be aware of the restrictions before they head out for the evening. Alcohol in public is not a recipe for a happy New Year, and there will be restrictions in place.
Flower said people should travel early to where they would be celebrating and should plan to stay in and enjoy the occasion with friends and family.
She said celebrators would not be able to walk around with alcohol.
“And it should go without saying that mixing alcohol and driving is entirely unacceptable.”
MDC said alcohol-free zones would apply in both Castlepoint and Riversdale from 6pm tomorrow until 6am Sunday.
It said road closures would apply from 4pm on Saturday until 6am on Sunday.
“People living within the road closure area, or renting accommodation, may be asked to provide proof of address to gain vehicular access.”
MDC said vehicle use within the road closure area was prohibited to ensure the safety of people enjoying the beach.
