A sunny sale day

The Masterton Weaner Fair went off without a hitch yesterday in the first sale since the Masterton Sale Yard was upgraded.

PGG Wrightson area livestock manager Steve Wilkinson said yard owners PGG Wrightson and Carrfields had just completed upgrades, including a new wastewater system, a bathroom upgrade, and earthquake strengthening and were glad the yards could be used for the sale.

The annual Masterton weaner steer and bull sale drew buyers from across the North Island, seeing cattle selling at prices of up to $1460 per head.

Wilkinson said that prices were up from last year, with Glenbrae selling bulls at a top price of $1460 per head and Onetai selling steers at $1400 a head.

Wilkinson wasn’t sure how much prices had increased since last year, but it was promising for farmers. He said people who had bought from the sale in the past had come back this year, going for the same bloodlines as they had previously.

The furthest cattle were sent after the sale was Fairlie in the Mackenzie District.

Wilkinson said it was a very good day for local sellers and buyers.
