An investigation is underway into a suspicious blaze that razed a garage in South Wairarapa.
Police and Fire and Emergency confirmed that investigators were at the scene on North Soldiers Settlement Rd in South Featherston.
Emergency services were called to the blaze, the cause of which is unknown, shortly before 11pm on Tuesday.
Initial reports indicating life at risk saw the job escalate with Featherston, Martinborough, Greytown, and Carterton brigades responding.
However, police said it appeared no one was injured in the incident.
Featherston Fire Brigade chief Colin McKenna said the fire was “fierce” upon arrival, with extreme heat emanating from the 15×20 metre shed.
“It was really hot in there. There’s not a lot left.”
It appeared an aluminium boat and possibly a vehicle were inside the garage at the time.
McKenna said the brigades used every last drop of water to extinguish the fire.
“We had our two trucks, as well as Martinborough and Greytown and the tanker from Carterton, and we used everything that was available.”
Crews remained at the scene until 2.30am yesterday, keeping an eye on scorched powerlines until the power was shut off, McKenna said.
“There were some lines over the top of the shed that were damaged, and we were concerned about them coming down.”
McKenna said no other structures were damaged or at risk of becoming engulfed in flames.
Police confirmed inquiries into how the blaze started are ongoing.
The fire was the second shed inferno in South Wairarapa in two days, with crews responding to a blaze that destroyed a seed shed near Martinborough on Monday.
