Gunshot victim in hospital

The victim of a shooting on a Lansdowne street on Wednesday night is refusing to cooperate with police after being treated at Masterton Hospital for his injuries.

The man arrived at the hospital at about 8pm with a head injury and leg wound.

It is believed his injuries were suffered on Matai St.

Wairarapa area commander Inspector Scott Miller said the man was taken to hospital by an associate and that the report had come from hospital staff.

“There had been nothing reported to police prior to that,” Miller said.

Officers went to the hospital and found “a male associated with the Nomad gang who had a head and a leg injury”.

Miller said neither injury was life-threatening, but the leg wound is “believed to be a result of a firearm”.

At the time of reporting, police were not able to confirm the type of firearm or calibre involved.

“The occupants of that address have not been in any way cooperative with police and the male that went to hospital is not cooperative with police at this stage,” Miller said.

After police attended the hospital, they identified the address “where this is likely to have occurred”.

Miller said police “held” the property overnight and examined it yesterday morning.

Police are continuing to make enquiries but are “open to anyone from the community or public that would have information” coming forward.

Miller said there is no concern for public safety after the incident, saying it was “an internal matter that has happened within that house”.

“Police have likely spoken to those that are involved, but none of them are cooperating.”
