A man accused of firing a shotgun at a car in Masterton has been denied bail.
The 22-year-old man, who has been granted interim name suppression, has been charged with discharging a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, as well as burglary, threatening to kill, and dangerous driving.
The core allegations surround several incidents at the end of July.
The man and an associate are accused of going to an address in Masterton, intimidating the occupants by telling them they owed money to the Head Hunters gang, and breaking windows.
He is accused of chasing two people in his car to another Masterton address on July 30 and – in broad daylight – firing a shotgun twice in the middle of Ballance St, smashing the rear window of the car they were in.
He is also accused of several driving offences.
Last week, he appeared in Masterton District Court via video link from prison to apply for bail at a Masterton address.
A guilty plea was entered to a charge of driving while suspended, but no pleas had been entered on the other charges.
Lawyer Andra Mobberley said her client was likely to enter a not-guilty plea on some of the more serious charges, so faced a considerable period in custody before any trial proceeding.
The police prosecutor opposed the bail because the alleged shooting happened in broad daylight on a residential street with several witnesses.
They noted a resident came home to find an upstairs window broken and a round of ammunition lying on the floor.
Police have not yet found the firearm involved in the alleged offending.
Judge Andrew Nicholls denied the request for bail.
“In my view, the combination of risks is too great; this address is simply too close to the complainants and victims,” he said.
Judge Nicholls said the man could reapply for bail, but he recommended he do so at an address a couple of hours away from Masterton.
He is due to reappear on September 28.
