Wairarapa College student Ava Saba was honoured by New Zealand’s Governor-General last week for her passion and achievements in hip hop, and jazz dance.

Saba was awarded the Wellington Down Syndrome Association Frances Clarke Memorial Award in the 8-16-year-old category for her participation at StarJam, an organisation for young New Zealanders with disabilities.

The awards recognise special achievements of people born with down syndrome in the greater Wellington region.

The 14-year-old was recognised for her participation in StarJam, and achievements in level 4 at the Dance NZ Made Syllabus for jazz and hip hop as part of the honour.

She was presented her award by Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy who described her as a “keen jazz and hip-hop dancer.”

Saba was also described “as a fiercely independent and astoundingly creative young woman from Masterton”.

The award was about celebrating “stories of success, mentorship and living life to the fullest”, Dame Patsy said on Facebook.
