A Carterton resident has raised a protest about the town’s Lincoln Rd, which they have dubbed “the worst road in the world”.

A sign has been pinned to a fence near the corner of Lincoln and Brooklyn roads, about 2km north east of central Carterton.

It read, “Dunedin has the second steepest street in the world. Carterton has the worst. Your [sic] on it”.

The notice has support from Carterton residents.

Nichola Andersen grew up in the area and now lives in Rotorua.

She noticed the sign when visiting family on holiday and posted it to social media.

“Being an out-of-towner now I don’t know much about it, but I do know everyone’s complaining.”

Johnny Robinson of Dirty Works Truck and Digger Hire advertises his company at the same corner.

Judy Johns of Carterton at Lincoln Rd. The road’s condition has been criticised by residents.

He said he had seen the sign on Facebook and was also unhappy with the road’s condition.

“It’s crap. For the amount of tax money and ratepayer’s money, it’s crap.”

Robinson said he thought Lincoln Rd had been in a poor state for years, and recent work had made it worse.

“They put drains in down the side and done another patch-up job. And if you ride a motorbike it’s even more dangerous. They talk about road safety for ACC on motorcycles, but they need to look at their roads, don’t they? That would be a good place to start.”

Judy Johns, a retired teacher, also lives nearby. She first saw the sign just before Christmas. She said most residents she had spoken to about it shared the sentiment.

“I avoid it [the road] where I can. Someone has appeared with this sign, and everyone agrees.”

The Times-Age got in touch with the landowner where the sign is placed for comment. There was no response at time of publication.

  1. what a crock of shit, the road in question would not even come close to being the worst road in the world. I think some people just want a bit of notoriety.
