A woman is “fortunate” to be alive after her car crossed the median line and crashed into Opaki Bridge on State Highway 2 on Tuesday afternoon.
Police, ambulance, and Fire and Emergency New Zealand responded to the crash, which was reported at 3.20pm.
The Serious Crash Unit was also notified and attended the incident.
A police spokesperson said a badly hurt woman was flown to Wellington Hospital by the Palmerston North rescue helicopter.
At the same time, another passenger was taken by ambulance to Wairarapa Hospital with moderate injuries.
Fire and Emergency Masterton station officer Mike Cornford said the woman was “well-trapped” in the vehicle and firefighters had to remove the door before getting her out.
“The female driver was reasonably well-trapped in the vehicle, so it was just a bit of a waiting game until ambulance could actually stabilise her enough to start the extrication,” he said.
“We ended up having to take the side of the car out and then just assisted the ambulance.
“It’s very fortunate there wasn’t a vehicle coming the other way as she had actually crossed the centre line and hit the right-hand side of the bridge [driving south towards Masterton].”
