Police are appealing for witnesses after the aggravated burglary of the Colombo General Store in Masterton last week.
A man armed with a claw hammer entered the store, on the corner of Colombo Rd and Herbert St, at 5.10pm on Friday.
Detective Sergeant William van Woerkom said the man demanded money and damaged some property.
Staff were in the rear of the shop at the time. They were shaken by the incident but uninjured.
An alarm was triggered and the man fled the scene on foot.
He ran east on Herbert St and then turned left on to Makora Rd. He was wearing a black jacket with the hood up and black pants.
His face was covered with dark material and dark sunglasses and he was carrying a claw hammer wrapped in a dark jacket.
Police would like to talk to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have information that could assist the investigation or help to identify the offender.

Another Masterton dairy was hit on Tuesday night when two people entered the store, on High St, and made off with tobacco products and potato chips. A police media spokesperson said it did not appear any weapons were involved.
