The Wairarapa’s Teen Parent Unit won its netball tournament by one point in the last minute over the weekend.

The TPU had been meeting Shift, a charitable trust based in Wairarapa, once a week this year.

Run by Alicia Todd and Kata Ngatai, the programme is designed to give young women confidence in leadership roles.

As part of their “LeadHERship programme” this term, teen parents were tasked to run an event as part of their lesson.

“This year, they put on the Lower North Island Teen Parent Unit Netball Tournament”, Todd said.

Hosted in Porirua at the Te Rauparaha Arena on September 11, five teams entered the event from Wairarapa, Heretaunga, Tawa, Levin, and Palmerston North.

“It was a thrilling round-robin event, where it came down to the last round with a deciding game between Heretaunga and Wairarapa”, Todd said.

“Wairarapa were down five goals at halftime, where in the last half, they took out the game by winning by one in the last minute.

“The Wairarapa Teen Parent Unit also put together well-being packages and participation certificates for the other teams.

“As a big part of our programme, their learnings have been on self-love, so they wanted to share that.”
