Wairarapa’s hospitality class was on show from yesterday when Visa Wellington On A Plate returned.
For the first time the delicious event has been extended for the whole month of August.
Wairarapa businesses are taking part in Dine [Union Square, 1860 Restaurant], Burger [Cafe Medici, Greytown Hotel, Peppers Parehua, Union Square, The Clareville Bakery], Cocktail [Peppers Parehua] and Events [Julicher Estate Winery, Orui Station, Peppers Parehua, Rose and Smith, The Clareville Bakery, The Country Cooking School, Union Square].
VisaWOAP is New Zealand’s largest food festival, celebrating culinary talent, producers and suppliers in the region.
This year the first two weeks are dedicated to Dine Wellington, followed by two weeks dedicated to Burger Wellington.
The event programme is jam-packed with events taking place across the month and Wellington Cocktail is also running for the whole event.
This year restaurants are required to make a ‘hero’ of Wellington regional produce and ingredients in their festival dishes.
A VisaWOAP spokesperson said the event is “a regional celebration of food”.
Festival awards are given out to recognise excellence. The public have the chance to help determine who will be awarded the best Dine, Cocktail, or Burger by rating online.
At the end of the festival five finalists for each category will be chosen based on the public’s ratings.
They then go on to be judged by an industry panel to determine the winner.
