Three people were injured at a crash-black spot in Waingawa, south of Masterton, yesterday afternoon.

A hatchback and a ute collided at the intersection of Cornwall Rd and State Highway 2 around 3pm.

A Wellington Free Ambulance spokesperson confirmed all three patients were taken to Wairarapa Hospital – two with moderate injuries and one with minor injuries.

Constable Clint Rogers said a man driving a Ford Ranger had been travelling north on SH2.

A logging truck travelling south turned right into Norfolk Rd, which obscured the view of the Ford Ranger driver.

“He’s then turned right into Cornwall Rd and not seen the south-bound oncoming car which has effectively t-boned him.”

Masterton fire station officer Kevin Smith said firefighters managed traffic and kept the scene safe.

Since 2000, there have been more than 40 crashes, including two that were fatal in 2000 and 2007, at the Norfolk Rd and Cornwall Rd intersection with SH2.

Figures supplied by the New Zealand Transport Agency, also show that five people have been seriously injured, while 24 people received minor injuries.
