Greytown’s newest pop-up eatery is parking up after a successful first season.
Since it opened late last year, thousands have visited the al fresco eatery and live music venue, ‘Truckstop’, tucked in behind the main road.
The management team made the decision to close for the season because of omicron. It reopened two weeks ago with significantly reduced numbers attending, after being closed for two weeks because of the weather.
More than 4600 are estimated to have been to the popular family-focused outdoor venue since it opened in early December. People from Manawatu, Auckland and New Plymouth as well as the wider Wellington region and across Wairarapa visited. It was open most Friday and Saturday nights over the summer.
A combination of food trucks, live music and a non-alcoholic bar hit the spot, at a time people were looking for well-ventilated outdoor spaces.
The establishment was the brainchild of Greytown businessman Adam Blackwell.
“We’ve seen a great blend of local families, super-fans that come every week, and tourists all sitting down and sharing food, drinks and music in a happy atmosphere,” he said.
“Our goal was to provide a family-friendly place with a variety of food and music. It’s been terrific to see more than 4600 people who have come for Thai, Mexican, vegan, French and other cuisines as well as some very decent cheeseburgers, doughnuts, and ice cream. We’re blown away by the positive feedback and the numbers”.
He said the venue had been designed as a temporary summer place, to support the many events Wairarapa generally hosted. He encouraged people now to support the town’s permanent establishments.
“We’re also very mindful of the need for Greytown’s hospitality venues to be as strongly supported as possible during this time.
“Truckstop was designed as a pop-up to help provide variety and extra capacity during, what would have been a huge summer for Wairarapa, with popular events and great weather attracting lots of visitors.”
