High winds in the region caused a tree to fall on to a car near Riversdale and flipped a caravan on its side on the Remutaka Hill on Sunday, authorities said.
The strong gusts caused a tree to fall through powerlines and on to a car on Sunday afternoon on Homewood Rd heading to Riversdale [pictured].
An ambulance service spokesperson said four people were taken to Wairarapa Hospital by road – two with moderate injuries and two with minor injuries. A rescue helicopter had been called to attend the incident.
Power was cut to 388 households at 1.30pm because of the incident Powerco said. It expected power to be restored by 6.30pm on Sunday.
Work to clear the tree was ongoing Sunday afternoon.
Riversdale resident Allan Emmerson said the road was still closed at 5pm with traffic detoured along a single-lane shingle road.
Metservice had issued a strong wind warning for Wairarapa north of Masterton and Tararua District until 2pm yesterday.
Meanwhile, emergency services were called out when a caravan flipped while southbound on the Remutaka Hill Rd, blocking traffic on Sunday evening. No one was hurt.
