A body believed to be that of missing tramper Darren Myers has been found in the Tararua Range today.
Myers, 49, from the Wellington suburb of Karori, failed to return from tramping the Northern Crossing 12 days ago.
His brother-in-law, Duncan Styles, confirmed that the body found was that of Myers.
Styles said the family was gutted about the news.
Police have yet to make a formal identification.
Police said the body was found during an aerial search this morning, and search and rescue teams were on their way to the site.
It was expected to take some time for the teams to reach the location, understood to be near the Arete Bivouac.
This is close to the location of Myers’ last communication via text message with his wife on Thursday, May 30.
At the time he went missing, weather conditions were poor with rain and snow.
The search has been underway for 12 days after Myers failed to arrive at Holdsworth on Saturday, June 1.
The harsh environment proved unkind to searchers as well, with one volunteer breaking their leg while looking for Myers.
In 2016 trampers Mykhailo Stepura, 39, and Pavel Pazniak, 32, died of hypothermia in the Tararuas.
