Hundreds of Carterton residents started their summer off right with sun, food and dancing at the annual Summer Street Party on Sunday.

Organiser Robyn Cherry-Campbell said the free event, which is in its second year, brought together both new and existing residents of Carterton to celebrate “the really cool town we live in”.

More than 500 people turned up at Holloway St to enjoy a variety of entertainment, with many people showing off their dance moves to live music from Wellington band Shenanigans.

Carterton Mayor John Booth commented on the number of “very good dancers” among the residents, saying it was “a very happy crowd”.

“There were a lot of new residents there and people I hadn’t seen before, so it was great to walk around and talk to people,” he said.

He said the party showed off the relaxed lifestyle and friendliness of the Carterton community.

There was no shortage of things to do at the event, with some families enjoying picnics while the children took part in chalk street art activities.

Others made the most of the on-site food trucks and the cash bar in the Events Centre foyer.

Artist Martin Doyle was also in attendance and documented the party in a series of sketches which he has shared on his Facebook page.

“We’re delighted with the number of people who came along,” said Cherry-Campbell.

“It will be an annual event for sure.”
