St Matt’s running for a good cause

Running around a sports track for 16 hours straight isn’t what most teenagers would call a fun Friday night.

But for a good cause, and surrounded by friends, some were willing to compromise.

And that’s exactly what has driven about 80 St Matthew’s Collegiate students to undertake the gruelling challenge for what will be the inaugural Relay for Charity.

Head girl Cass Dawson, 17, has been organising the event with her team of prefects – with the aim of raising at least $1000 for cancer charity KidsCan.

“We were talking, on athletics day, about the Relay for Life and did a bit of research on it.

“Unfortunately, it only happens every two years.

“We thought, we would love to do something similar, so we decided to do a Relay for Charity on our school field involving all our school girls.”

The 16 hours of running began at 5pm on Friday night at the St Matthew’s Collegiate sports field, and ended at 9am today.

There were to be six teams divided into age groups, and each team was given a colour as a costume theme.

“For example, Year 12 have green and are going in camo gear,” Cass said.

The event was going ahead with sponsorship from Breadcraft, Jonny Griffith, Taylors Electrical, Rival Wealth, Cabernet Food, and Zap, but people can also sponsor the students per lap or for the entire event.

“We want to raise at least $1000 – and we will be selling sausages on the night too, so hopefully we get that money.”

To donate, contact Cass on [email protected] and she will provide banking details.
