Solway safety upgrades require consultation

Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency [NZTA] is seeking consultation on changes it is proposing to State Highway 2 in Solway.

The changes include no-stopping areas along a short section of the highway from South Belt to 243 High St, around the entrance to the Harvey Norman development.

Last month, Harvey Norman construction manager John Pothan said the store was aiming for an opening at about Easter next year.

A spokesperson for NZTA said that the works would reduce crashes.

“Stopping cars and trucks from parking in these locations would improve visibility and reduce the chance of crashes.

“It would make it easier to see if you’re pulling out onto the highway and help keep people cycling and walking safe, which will be really important as this area developed.”

The upgrades come as part of the SH2 safety improvements between Masterton and Carterton.

Other improvements included the construction of three roundabouts, the removal of the overtaking lane just south of Masterton and lowering speed limits to 80kmh and 60kmh on some sections of the road. Trenching work and relocation services were already underway, and construction on the roundabouts would begin next month.

Submissions will close on August 19 at 5pm.
