School in lockdown after student threatened

A Wairarapa College student was threatened with a screwdriver this morning after they caught a man trying to break into a car.

The school went into lockdown while police investigated the incident.

At around 10.15am, the student saw a person attempting to break in to a car near the front of the college.

When the would-be thief realised he was being observed, he threatened the student with a screwdriver before running away.

The school immediately called police and was advised to keep students inside.

Senior Sergeant Barry Bysouth said the lockdown was lifted when police confirmed there was no risk to students, sometime after 11am.

“The response by the school was excellent and I commend them for acting quickly to report the initial incident and take preventative action.”
