A woman was badly hurt in a car crash near Masterton on Friday.
The driver, in her 50s, was the sole occupant of a BMW SUV which spun off Masterton Stronvar Rd at about 4.30pm on Friday.
She was taken to Palmerston North Hospital by helicopter after emergency personnel got her out of the car.
She was heading towards Wainuioru when her car left the road on a downhill left-hand curve.
It went over the roadside fence and plunged five metres into the neighbouring paddock before breaking though a second wire fence on the field’s far side.
It was stopped by a log on a second slope.
The woman made a call for help on her own phone.
Fire, ambulance, and police officers arrived shortly after.
After a brief search, police found the car down the second slope.
Officers from all three services combined to take her from the car.
After about an hour of careful work, firefighters and paramedics then carried her up the slope, ready to be collected by Philips Search and Rescue Trust pilots.
The chopper landed and flew her away for further care.
