Enthusiasts from Wairarapa Roller Derby got an international fix on Wednesday when two global stars of the sport called into the Masterton skatepark to share their knowledge and skills.
American Hillary Buscovick, or ‘Scald Eagle’, and New Zealand-born Samara Pepperell, aka ‘Lady Trample’, second and third left above, have been touring New Zealand in recent months teaching roller derby.
This Masterton stop was added to a countrywide tour after Masterton man Minty Hunter, far right, got in touch so his daughter Meg, 13, far left, could learn from the best.
Wairarapa Roller Derby chairwoman Sarah Nelson said the clinic was a great opportunity to learn from some of the best.
“It was just a really cool clinic where we learnt how to skate in the park.”
The co-ed, all-inclusive Wairarapa league team usually trains at the Clareville stadium or Masterton YMCA and are training recruits for the next game in the Hutt on April 13.
