Wairarapa Red Cross volunteers delivered post-covid-19 care packages to many elderly residents on Friday and some recipients immediately shared them with neighbours.
Greytown volunteer Val Saxton delivered 10 boxes of goodies on Friday to people she knew from her meals on wheels service that she set up two years ago – this is now under the umbrella of the Wairarapa Red Cross.
But when Saxton dropped in to deliver the box to Greytown centenarian Joyce Cryer, the topic quickly moved to rugby.
Cryer turns 102 in a couple of months and had plenty to say about the sport and was looking forward to the Super Rugby matches.
Cryer is a devout Crusaders fan and her favourite player is Crusader kicker Richie Mo’unga.
“I picked him to be an All Black way back – I recognised that in him,” she said.
Retired plumber Leo Wallis and his wife Phyllis were pleased to receive a package too and would be dishing out some of its contents to friends and family.
Saxton said a man she delivered one too asked her to give it to the neighbour because he thought the family could do with it more than him.
During the lockdown, many of the usual volunteers, being over 65, stopped doing deliveries but most are back now and more volunteers have come forward.
Saxton said she had capacity to deliver meals to more people in Greytown and was happy to receive calls.
She can be called on 06 304 9514.
