Putting success for 40 years

Masterton Mini Golf celebrated 40 years of fun on the weekend with a tournament.

Opening in 1979, the idea for a course came from Blyth King when he came back from overseas determined to convince Masterton South Rotary that the club should build a mini golf course.

It proved to be a good choice, providing a constant source of funds for the club, Rotary spokeswoman Marilyn Bouzaid said.

Bouzaid said whatever the club made, went straight back into the community.

“In a way [it works] in a circle,” she said.

“Being for the community, but benefits the community.”

With so many things in the park for children, she said it was something for adults to enjoy too.

For the first 10 years the course was run and managed by members, followed by Duncan Adair for 24 years and the present managers Catie and Ljinon Manson, who have been running the course for six years.

Catie said managing the course was a great job.

Connecting with the visitors and regulars, hearing the laughter, “and where better than to be in the park”, she said.

The couple love participating in the mini-putt game themselves, because of the constant challenge.

“We still play, and every game is different. Some days you are on form and sometimes rubbish.”
