It’s going to be another loud weekend at Masterton Motorplex’s drag strip as the club gears up for a trifecta of action in its Auckland Invasion event.

Events kick off at 10am today and will feature the Kiwi Thunder group one national series, the Outlaw 71 final round and the Auckland Invasion.

The Kiwi Thunder Group One series boasts the country’s fastest top door-slammers, dragsters and altered vehicles, including Johnny & Nigel of Alsop Racing, who are gunning for the national win.

The runners-up at the first meeting will be looking to take out the Masterton round after coming first in Top Alcohol in Masterton in February, along with runner-up honours in Top Alcohol at the 2018 IHRA National Track Series, and runner-up in the first round of the Top Alcohol the Kiwi Thunder Group One National Series at Meremere.

Outlaw 71 is all about putting on a show for the crowd and will feature the country’s top supercharged outlaw cars.

Twelve teams will be battling for points with the series winner to be decided at this final round.

The Auckland Invasion portion will host New Zealand’s fastest street legal racers, including Putaruru’s Jeremy Hewson, whose car is the quickest petrol-powered rotary (running on 98 octane) in the world, with an elapsed time of 8.69 seconds at 155mph [249kmh].

The event is also a full competition meet, which means there will be motorcycles, street and super sedans, junior classes, and all the other action-packed racing you’ve come to expect.

Gate entry is $20 a person each day, under-14s free.

Gates open at 9am today and 8am tomorrow with first events kicking off an hour later.
