A 22-year-old man who allegedly rammed a police car on the weekend appeared in Masterton District Court on Monday where he faced several charges including drink driving, wilful damage, and attempting to cause grievous bodily harm.

A police spokesman said on Monday officers were called to a disorder outside a house on Cameron Cres in Masterton at about 8.45pm on Saturday.

On arrival, police found several people standing on the footpath outside the house, but the main “antagonist” had already left the area, Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Bysouth said.

As police were interviewing witnesses, the suspect came back and drove his vehicle at speed towards the group on the footpath and hit the police car parked in front of the group.

“No one was in the vehicle at the time, and the group on the footpath was not harmed,” Bysouth said.

“The offending vehicle came to a stop nearby, and a male was arrested at the scene.”

Bysouth said from witness accounts, Wairarapa Police had identified that the manner of driving was “extremely dangerous and we are fortunate that no one was seriously injured in the incident”.
