You can rest easy sitting down at Masterton’s newest picnic tables – not only are they a great spot to watch the children on their bikes but they’re also helping to save the environment.

The two new picnic tables that were installed last week at Masterton’s bike skills park are made of 100 per cent recycled plastic from New Zealand and Australia.

Masterton District Council installed the tables as part of its contribution to the bike park and community facilities and activities manager Andrea Jackson said the council were happy with the new furniture.

“We thought it was important to look at ways that we can ensure recycling efforts are maximised and this sort of upcycling initiative ensures we can help fully close the loop.

“Putting this sort of furniture into a children’s recreation area also gives parents and caregivers an opportunity to start the conversation about recycling with our younger community members.”

Jackson said the council will also be putting in four other sets of furniture from the same supplier at Castlepoint, two of which will be accessible for people with less mobility.

Rotary Club of Masterton South project co-ordinator John Bunny said the new seating highlighted the ethos of the park.

“We’re trying to keep it user-friendly and eco-friendly. One of our tables is designed so wheelchair users will be able to access it.

“They’re very robust, and a lot of councils use them, so they have to be up to specs.”

Bunny said the cycle park was nearing completion with sponsors’ boards, rules of the park and more seating being the next steps for the project.
