Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History has made a call on who will lead the jewel of Masterton’s cultural crown into the future.
Sarah McClintock has been appointed Aratoi’s new director after the departure of previous director Susanna Shadbolt.
McClintock has a background in exhibition, collection, and heritage management, having worked previously for Archives New Zealand, Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehuna Whanganui, and most recently as the curator and collection manager at The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatu in Nelson.
McClintock is passionate about regional arts and heritage and has devoted the last decade of her career to telling stories of places outside major metropolitan centres.
In her role at The Suter Art Gallery, McClintock worked in partnership with the six main iwi in Te Tauihu and with an iwi curator to highlight toi Maori from an iwi lead perspective.
Aratoi Regional Trust chair David Moriarty said McClintock’s appointment was the culmination of a “rigorous process” to select a new director.
“That we received so many quality applications from all over the country is a reflection of how Aratoi is perceived nationally.
“We are delighted to have Sarah join Aratoi; after a number of years of hard work, Aratoi is now at the stage where it is ready for someone to take it to the next level.
“We wish Sarah all the best in her new role and look forward to seeing her successes.”
McClintock will commence her role as Director of Aratoi on September 16, 2022.
Previous director Susanna Shadbolt has taken up the role of chief executive of Te Manawa Museum in Palmerston North.
