A man is in a critical condition after his ute hit the bridge on Bridge St in Eketahuna early on Saturday morning.
Emergency services were alerted about 3.15am, Eketahuna fire chief Max Mayer said on Monday. “He hit the bridge pretty hard,” he said.
The Times-Age understands the 20-year-old man is a well-known local.
A police spokeswoman said fire and ambulance attended and the police unit called from Pahiatua went directly to Wairarapa Hospital.
The police Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
A helicopter was going to fly the man to hospital but it had to be stood down because of fog and he was taken by ambulance.
