A man was left “shaken” after three people attacked and robbed him in Masterton in broad daylight, immediately after they had broken into his car.

One offender appeared in Youth Court on Thursday.

The other two suspects were known to police, but there was not enough evidence to proceed with charges, a police spokesperson said.

The incident happened at Memorial Park in Masterton at 2.50pm on Sunday when the man’s car was broken into by three people.

Returning to the car, he spotted the suspects and began to film them on his iPhone.

Initially, the trio fled the scene on foot, but noticing that the owner of the car was in the process of evidence-gathering, the alleged thieves turned on their heels and rushed him, assaulting him and stealing the device, along with its incriminating footage.

They then fled the scene and were last seen heading towards Takahe St into an area known as the bird sanctuary.

The victim was left with minor injuries after the assault, and a police spokesperson said he was “understandably shaken” by the incident.

He was offered victim support.

Police are asking people in the area to check their properties for the iPhone or other items that may have been discarded during the escape, and to review their home CCTV cameras for any footage of three males walking in the Takahe St area around that time.

Police urge anyone with information to call 105 and quote file number 200927/3499.
