Wairarapa mum Nicola Harwood got more than she bargained for with her Christmas cookies this year – a new car.

Harwood, 38, of West Taratahi, won the star prize of a brand-new Mini Countryman in Cookie Time’s Christmas competition.

The company ran a Willy Wonka-style promotion for the motor, with 500 Golden Tickets hidden in Christmas Cookies buckets sold nationwide in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Finders of Golden Tickets had to register online to go into the draw to win the car, or one of 19 prizes of $500 cash.

The mother of four said she bought the treats at Countdown in Masterton, before heading out to Castlepoint to stay with friends, and discovered the ticket then.

“The biscuits were devoured in a day. I found the golden ticket in the bottom of the bucket, and I said to everyone, ‘wait a minute, I’m just winning us a Mini’. They said, ‘yeah, right, good odds, one in 500 chance’.”

When the company called earlier this month Harwood thought it was just a survey. “But then they broke the news to me. I was laughing and crying. I didn’t actually know what to do.

“We were so surprised. I’m just trying to take in that we won a car. I feel very lucky.”
