The little school that could has found two enrolments for next year and is hosting an open day in the bid to bolster the roll.

Tuturumuri School has seemingly come back from the brink after it was announced last month that there were no more pupils.

The school’s board of trustees chairman Mike Firth said the school had the backing of the locals who had “pulled out all the stops” to ensure the school remained open.

The enrolments had come from a family who had been abroad but had returned to the area, he said.

After being away, they realised how good the education at the school was.

“It’s still a bit of an uphill battle but the community wants to fight on.”

He said the community would dearly love to see the classrooms filled with inquiring young minds so that future generations could experience the school’s special character learning both inside and outside the classroom.

Thanks to “prudent management”, the board had enough money set aside to purchase a bus if there was a need to transport children from Martinborough to Tuturumuri.

The open day was the perfect chance for people to check out the indoor swimming pool, tennis court, and organic vegetable gardens at the school.

Staff and trustees would all be on hand to help answer any questions.

The open day will be held from 10am to 12pm on December 10, and will include a sausage sizzle.
