A Masterton dairy was robbed at knifepoint on Sunday afternoon.

A man entered the Colombo General Store shortly after 2.30pm, threatening a staff member before leaving with a quantity of cash and cigarettes.

Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Bysouth said police had run two search warrants in relation to the robbery and had found some property believed to be linked to the incident.

He said police were following strong lines of inquiry and working with the victims to make sure they are supported.

It’s the second dairy robbery in the space of about a month.

A staff member at The Right Dairy in Carterton was also held up at knifepoint in June.

While it was concerning, Bysouth said it was not common in Wairarapa and police did not believe the two robberies were linked in any way.

He asked that shop owners and staff remained vigilant.

If they had any concerns about suspicious behaviour, they should call police, he said.

The Colombo General Store owners were approached by the Times-Age but declined to comment on the incident.

  • Anyone who was in the area and might have seen something is asked to contact Wairarapa Police, phone police line 105 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
