Work on building three raised pedestrian crossings in Carterton, Masterton, and Featherston will continue this week in several roadwork projects set for Wairarapa’s state highway network.
The work is expected to bring delays for motorists.
Construction of the three crossings were part of the New Zealand Transport Agency’s pedestrian crossing project.
NZTA plan to install 21 raised pedestrian crossings on State Highway 2 and 53, to be completed by 2024.
Near South End School, the Carterton crossing was in its final stages of the islands and footpath being reinstated. Work was expected to be complete by today.
Work on the Masterton crossing on Chapel St [between Essex and Cole Sts], and Featherston crossing on Fitzherbert St [by Daniell St], will continue during the next two weeks with altered lane layouts and stop/go traffic control to be put in place.
At the time of the raised pedestrian crossings being announced, NZTA regional manager of maintenance and operations Mark Owen said increasing pedestrian safety in Wairarapa was a key focus of the project.
“State Highway 2 between Masterton and Featherston is a busy stretch of road, with lots of different people using it, including many pedestrians in the towns along the highway,” he said.
“We have identified 21 locations for raised pedestrian crossings along State Highways 2 and 53, which will significantly improve safety for pedestrians.”
International research shows that raised pedestrian crossings reduce deaths and serious injuries by about 40 per cent.
Slip prevention works on Remutaka Hill Rd; roadside drainage works between Featherston and Tauherenikau; line marking south of Mt Bruce to south of Opaki; and tree-felling for Mt Bruce have also been scheduled this week.
