Driver trapped

One person was flown to hospital in critical condition following a crash north of Masterton on Sunday morning.

Emergency services received reports of the accident on Dreyers Rock Rd in Mauriceville shortly after 8am.

A police spokesperson said that the driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle, which had travelled a short way down a bank.

A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency New Zealand [Fenz] said that crews from Masterton and Mauriceville also attended the scene, arriving sometime before 9am.

“It’s not clear when exactly our crews arrived at the scene because cellphone coverage out that way is patchy,” she said.

“It’s a long drive out from Masterton, and there’s also those communication factors making it more difficult.”

On arrival, the spokesperson said that crew found the driver trapped in the vehicle, which was off the road.

“Crew extracted the patient, who was removed from the vehicle at 9.55am.”

A spokesperson for Wellington Free Ambulance confirmed it also attended and that the patient was taken by helicopter to Wellington Hospital in critical condition.

A spokesperson for Wellington Hospital said yesterday the patient was in serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

Police said there was no report of the road being closed at the time of the crash, and confirmed there will be an investigation to establish the cause of the crash.
