Chris Casha has been having a bet on the Melbourne Cup for years, but finally picked the winner on Tuesday – and had a handful of TAB tickets with the right name on them when Cross Counter crossed the line in front.
“It’s about time, after all these years,” he laughed, when the result was confirmed at Jackson St Bar.
“This is the first time I’ve had the winner.”
Celebrating with mate Frini Governor, who also backed the right horse, Casha conceded there wasn’t a lot of scientific method behind the choice.
“I backed it because it was a long-shot, really.
“And it had a good jockey.”
Casha had four bets on the result and was among the most delighted in the bar when the race was over.
A good crowd enjoyed the race at the bar, as they did throughout the country, with a spectacular sunny day in Masterton a far cry from the deluge that drenched the Flemington course in the hours before the race.
