Daffodil Day came early for the Cancer Society this year when Featherston’s 11-year-old Cohen Walford handed over a $5734 cheque.

The Kahutara School pupil had raised the impressive sum through a bike-a-thon aimed at boosting awareness around cancer.

His mum has a rare form of lung cancer, which is terminal.

Cohen and his friend, Devyn Urlich, got to ditch school early last week, with their teacher Ben Milne, and the trio presented the cheque to Wairarapa Cancer Society manager Jacinta Buchanan.

Cohen said he was proud of his efforts.

“It’s important to raise awareness about cancer because it can help a lot of people and if everyone joins in it would be much easier to do stuff to help.”

Mum Rachel Walford said she was incredibly proud of her son.

“I have been really impressed with him and also at his maturity.”

Cohen has written thank you cards to all those who gave to his cause.

Buchanan said the amount raised by Cohen was “amazing” and the money would go towards outreach services in South Wairarapa.

Daffodil Day is Friday, August 31.
