A quad bike crash at the beach near Lake Ferry on Thursday night left its two riders, one male and one female, with serious injuries.
The vehicle rolled on Whangaimoana Beach, about three metres from the sea, throwing them both off, with the quad bike landing on top of one of the riders.
Fire and Emergency, along with paramedics arrived at the scene swiftly after the 111 call was made.
One rider was driven straight to Wellington Hospital by ambulance, and the other was airlifted by a Life Flight Westpac rescue helicopter, which landed about 250m from the site of the crash.
One of the patients was later transferred to Canterbury District Health Board hospital. This was the second serious incident involving a quad bike in the space of a week – Saturday a week ago a quad bike crash involving two teenagers resulted in serious injuries and hospitalisation for both riders.
On Friday, a vehicle also crashed into a fence on State Highway 53, at the intersection with Bidwills Cutting Rd, although there were no injuries reported and an ambulance was not called.
