Martinborough’s Cafe Medici’s burger creation Prawn Underbelly was awarded first place in the Burger category at the Wellington on a Plate awards in Wellington on Monday night.

It’s the first time a Wairarapa eatery has won a WOAP award, and only the second time in the history of the festival that the Burger Wellington winner has come from a Wellington regional eatery.

It was last won by Lembas Cafe in Raumati in 2010, the first year of the burger competition.

The cafe’s creation, Prawn Underbelly, has king prawn toast with caramelised pork belly, Asian pickles, housemade sweet chilli dressing in a sesame and buttermilk bun with toffee crackling and Sichuan pepper fries.

The winning burger will again be available at Cafe Medici from today.
