The New Zealand Transport Agency is making minor safety improvements on Chapel St at the intersection with Cornwall St.
Contractors are building a central island which is hoped to make the road safer, particularly for pedestrians.
As part of the safety improvements, trees have been removed from the area and relocated elsewhere in Masterton.
This work had been planned before the lockdown and involved input from the council and residents.
It is expected to be completed by the end of June, depending on weather.
