Artist Ron Te Kawa watches Department of Conservation community ranger Joanne Waitoa sew mauri peace pennants during Seaweek 2019 at Te Patukituki o Wairarapa.
Seaweek, a national week-long environmental education event, celebrates New Zealand’s close connection with the sea.
Te Kawa said mauri peace pennants help bring the energy of the ocean and the natural world into unnatural spaces like offices.
Seaweek was celebrated at Te Patukituki on Thursday and Friday with activities including flax waka weaving and sailing, bamboo straw making, kaitiaki korero at a stream and beeswax wrap-making.
