Two thousand bottles of hand sanitiser will grace Wairarapa supermarket shelves this week thanks to Masterton’s Sup Brewery. Mark Harris, part-time brewer and full-time athletics coach has been busy brewing and bottling up hand sanitiser this week with business partner Arthur Sandford.

Their output will replenish stocks which have been laid bare since February. On Friday, Harris and Sandford finished bottling 750 sanitisers which are on schedule to reach Wairarapa shops today.

“We received a notice a few weeks ago saying Customs were approving breweries to make hand sanitiser if we felt there was a need,” Harris said.

“We thought, wow this is such a cool thing we can do for the community.

“As a company, we are small – it’s about trying to do something right, and it felt right from the word go.

“It has taken that amount of time to get the products we need because a lot of them are in short demand.”

Their product, Walsh’s Wash, is named after New Zealand’s top shot putter Tom Walsh.

It is a liquid-based solution, rather than gel, and its ingredients are based on a World Health Organisation recipe, Harris said.

It will be stocked at Foodstuffs stores in Wairarapa for $14 [250ml]. The label was designed by The Sign Factory in Masterton.
