A boat careered off High St in Carterton on Sunday afternoon and landed on top of a resident’s fence just after 4.30pm.
Two people who came outside after hearing a loud bang said the boat had detached from a ute that was towing it on a trailer.
“Just can’t believe your eyes really, seeing a boat on top of the neighbour’s fence,” Robyn Irwin said.
The boat came off just before a power pole, heading north.
It rubbed past it and skidded down the footpath for five metres before stopping on a resident’s lawn, smashing their low picket fence.
The neighbour said if someone had been out walking at that moment, they would’ve been pinned under it.
The damaged fence is at the front of Janice and Trevor Cross’ home.
Janice said her husband told her a female passenger got out of the back of a ute along with the passenger in the front and they both started laughing.
She said it seemed to be a “huge joke”.
They then drove off, leaving the boat there and did not talk to anyone.
Police came to the site of the crash, but nobody got the ute’s number plate before the driver left because it was covered in mud.
Witnesses did get the number plate for the trailer, which police told the Crosses hadn’t been registered for 12 years.
But police advised them that they would look through CCTV footage.
The boat remained lodged on the fence for the afternoon before being removed at night.
When neighbours caught up on the phone, one asked, “has the boat sunk yet or is it still there?”.
“No, it has sailed off,” another said.
The name of the boat is “Sea Ya”.
