A fire consumed a tiny house on a property in Opaki on Thursday.

The outhouse on State Highway 2 was used as rental accommodation.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire.

Masterton Fire Station officer Doug Flowerday said there was significant damage to the property.

“It was well-involved when we arrived,” Flowerday said.

The station had received a call about the fire at 11.50am.

Given the size of the house, crews were able to extinguish the fire within minutes of arriving on the scene.

The fire did not spread to any other structures.

One fire engine and a water tanker attended the fire.

Crews left the scene at about 1.40pm.

Nearby resident Russell Carthew was walking along a track through the Opaki recreation reserve at about 12.15pm when he saw the flames emerging from the house.

“It went up so quickly,” Carthew said.

“By the time I got my camera out, the fire engine had arrived … the flames were coming right out the roof – it was well ablaze.”

He said fire crews worked swiftly to get the blaze under control.

A Wellington fire investigator was working to determine the cause of the fire.
